The Dodge County Indian football team hosted the fifth ranked Jefferson County Warriors in their home opener for the 2009 season on last Friday.
The Warriors wasted no time showing why they are ranked in the top five AA teams in the state as they took the opening kickoff from the Indians and raced 88 yards for a touchdown to take a 6-0 lead after the extra-point kick was no good.
Dodge County fumbled the ball right back to Jefferson County on their third offensive play of the night and four plays later the Warriors scored their second touchdown of the night and the Warriors led 14-0 after the two-point conversion. The Dodge Indians couldn’t seem to get things going on either side of the ball and before the end of the first quarter Jefferson County had scored two more touchdowns. And then two more to begin the second quarter as the Warriors had jumped out to a commanding 42-0 lead over the home standing Dodge County Indians with just 8:59 left in the second quarter.
The Indians scored their lone touchdown of the night in the fourth quarter as running back Cyprin Burse scored on a 45 yard run at the 10:50 mark of the final quarter. Cole Evans’ kick was good and the Indians trailed 42-7.
The Indians did gain more first downs than the Warriors as they had 11 to Jefferson County’s 9. Dodge had 198 yards of total offense with 134 yards coming on the ground and 64 yards through the air. Jefferson County had 337 yards of offense with 213 rushing and 123 passing.
Leading on the offense for the Indians were: Cyprin Burse with 91 yards rushing on 14 attempts and one touchdown; Devon Simmons with 49 yards rushing on 14 attempts.
Quarterback Shawn Honeycutt completed 6 of 10 passes for 64 yards and one interception. Laquan Hogue had three receptions for 41 yards; Leonard Floyd had one reception for 12 yards. Devon Moorehead and Michael Knight each caught passes in the game also. Burse also had 108 yards on kickoff returns.
Leaders on the defensive side of the ball were: Laquan Hogue had four and a half tackles with three assists; Herschel Anderson had four tackles with 8 assists; Leonard Floyd had three and a half tackles with three assists; Michael Knight had two and a half tackles with three assists; Vic Edwards had two tackles with four assists; Tucker Stonecypher had two tackles with two assists.
The Indians travel this week to Sylvania to take on the Screven County Gamecocks in another region game at 7:30 p.m.
